Congratulations to the teams who represented CML well at the Beer City Cup in Asheville over the Labor Day weekend. We had a total of four teams at the 2025 AVL BCC event with two O40 and two O50 teams.
The CML O40 D2 team, captained by Russ Hoffman and Sachin Patel, won their group with a 2-0-1 record, but fell in the quarterfinals to eventual finalist, FC Boone.
EarthFit Habersham in the O40 Premier Division had the best showing of all CML teams by winning their group with a 2-0-0 record that included a win over the USMNT O40 team. They then outlasted the Sesame Street Get Along Gang 3-2 in PKs fueled by the heroics of GK Scott Rogers. After a clutch save in the opening round of penalties to keep EFH alive, the spotlight shifted to a keeper-on-keeper showdown. Rogers stepped up first and unleashed a rocket that kissed the crossbar inside the top-right corner to make it 8-7. Moments later, he sealed the deal—reading his counterpart perfectly, timing his leap, and swatting away the final shot to punch EFH’s ticket to the semi-finals.
The semifinals weren’t as kind to EFH. Trailing 2-0 late in the second half against longtime nemesis Highland Rovers FC, Derek Workman ignited a spark of hope with a thunderous strike from midfield that left the opposing keeper stunned. But despite the late momentum, EFH couldn’t find the equalizer and ultimately fell 2-1 to the Rovers.
Over in the 50’s division, neither Steven Shell Living nor Madra Rua could muster enough momentum to escape the group stage. Madra Rua started strong with a 2-0-0 run and needed just a single goal to advance, but came up short against a tough Shorebreak side out of Virginia Beach. Steven Shell Living drew an even harsher path: after winning their opening match, they needed only a win or tie from their next two games to move on. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as they dropped both matches, each to teams that would go on to reach the finals.
Great showing, fellas! We hope you have better luck in Savannah in March!
