It was another chilly night for what turned out to be some hot CML footy action in Week 2. A few teams in both divisions made some moves to improve their position in the table, while a few others lost ground.
Over 35/40 Division:
All of the games in the Over 35/40 Division were highly competitive this week. The early match featured two teams from the top half of the table, the Hawks/Doms and the Ospreys, going head-to-head. The Ospreys held the lead at halftime, but the Hawks/Doms rallied in the second half to take a 5–4 win, moving into 2nd place in the table with a 2–0 record.
In the middle match, the Vultures held off a valiant effort from the Owls to secure a 3–1 victory. The win allowed the Vultures to leapfrog both the Hawks/Doms and the Ospreys into first place, sitting at 2–0 with a +3 goal differential over the second-place Hawks/Doms. The Owls, now 0–2 with a –8 goal differential, drop to last place.
The late match looked like a blowout early, with the Eagles jumping out to a 5–1 halftime lead over the Falcons. However, first-year manager Russ Hoffman orchestrated a spirited second-half comeback, only to see his side come up just short in a 6–4 final. The result saw the two teams swap places in the table, with the Eagles moving up to 4th and the Falcons slipping to 5th.
Over 50 Division:
In the cane-and-walker division, Mack’s first-place Cougars built on an impressive Week 1 performance by battering the second-place Tigers 6–2 in the early match. The Cougars held onto their spot at the top of the table, while the Tigers slid all the way down to 4th.
The middle match featured the third-place Lynx against the fifth-place Panthers. It was a frustrating outing for the Lynx, who struggled to generate any offense as the Panthers largely controlled possession. There was a bit of late drama in the second half when the Panthers substitute manager, Jake Marcinko, added a 10th player on the field for about five minutes, but it ultimately had little impact. Already up 2–0, the Panthers added a third goal after the matter was resolved to put the match away.
The late match saw two field players from different teams stepping in to man the goals for the third-place Jags versus the last-place Lions. The game was tightly contested early, with the Jags holding a narrow 3–2 lead at halftime. The second half told a different story, however, as the Lions were held scoreless and the Jags added three more goals to close out a 6–2 win.
We’ll be back next Thursday, February 12, at Stoney Field for what should be some warmer game-time temperatures. We hope to see you there!
